Tableau offers various file types for saving your work. These include:
Workbooks (.twb): Tableau workbook files have the .twb file extension. They can contain one or more worksheets, along with optional dashboards and stories.
Packaged Workbooks (.twbx): Packaged workbooks, with the .twbx file extension, are single zip files that encompass a workbook, supporting local file data, and background images. This format is ideal for sharing your work, especially when others don't have access to the original data.
Bookmarks (.tbm):Â Tableau bookmark files have the .tbm file extension. These files contain a single worksheet and provide a quick way to share your work with others.
Extracts (.hyper): Tableau extract files, identifiable by the .hyper extension, are local copies of a portion or the entire dataset. They are used for sharing data, working offline, and enhancing performance.
Data Sources (.tds): Data source files have the .tds file extension. These files act as shortcuts to quickly connect to frequently used original data. They contain information needed for connecting to the actual data, along with any modifications like changing properties, creating calculated fields, or adding groups.
Packaged Data Sources (.tdsx): Packaged data source files (.tdsx) are zip files that include the data source file (.tds) mentioned earlier, as well as local file data like extract files (.hyper), text files, Excel files, Access files, and local cube files. This format simplifies sharing with others who may not have access to your local data.
These files can be saved in designated folders within the My Tableau Repository directory.
This directory is automatically created in your My Documents folder during Tableau installation. However, you also have the flexibility to save your work files in other locations, such as your desktop or a network directory.
With this folder usually there could be an "error 500" when Tableau is installed in coroporate environment as some of the files may be written on the Sharefolders or OneDrive.
If you need more information or want to explore specific details related to these file types, refer to the "Save Your Work" section in Tableau's documentation.
